Yinz Guys might know this Location by another name......The Old Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Home of the famous Iron City Beer. It's a cryin shame they closed the place and are tearing it down. Back in the day, it was not unusual to see Paddy Wagons,Police Cars, Squads,Chief's Buggies, and maybe a Pumper or two, pull up to one of the loading docks to pick up some free "gifts" !!!! ( for off duty consumption,of course) The Brewery was very generous to say the least. Some Lady smelled and saw Smoke coming from the windows and called it in. First in No.6 Engine Company led by Lt. McNeil, who by the way has a nose like a Bloodhound, an old member of the "Big House", No.8,of course, sniffed out the fire in a matter of minutes in all of that big Brewery. Matty Bachner of No.8,buddying or making all that call back loot, who can drive the Pumper or Truck blindfolded and with one arm and one leg tied behind his back, wheeled that Beast through the narrow alley's of the Brewery, to the Fire Building ,which turned out to be a cold storage unit in the Basement, where some old Insulation was burning. BC-3 Kopicko, also of the "Big House", naturally,Ordered a line dropped down into the Basement (another tried & true Tradition of the Fire Service) and Lt. McNeil made short work of the Fire. Chief Kopicko ordered the Axillary Units to return and advised Fire Alarm that the remaining Companies on the Zone would be there a while due to extensive Overhaul. With the Brewery well over 100 years old, this could have been a Disaster. But the 3rd. District did an excellent job as usual and saved this Sacred Ground of beer drinkers everywhere.
